What If Better Technology Did Less?

Innovation is usually described as adding more

New technology is often promoted through additional features:

A better camera.

A faster processor.

More applications.

More personalisation.

More content.

More ways to remain connected.

But when designing technology for children, “more” should not automatically mean “better.”

A product may become more powerful while becoming less appropriate for its intended user.

Simplicity can be a form of protection

Removing features is sometimes viewed as a limitation.

But every responsible product has limits.

A child’s bicycle is not considered defective because it cannot travel at motorway speeds. A school playground is not poorly designed because it does not contain every possible activity. A child’s bank account does not need every financial feature available to an adult.

Limits can reflect purpose, maturity and context.

Technology should be viewed in the same way.

A device created for a child could deliberately provide:

  • Communication with trusted contacts.

  • Emergency access.

  • Essential messaging.

  • Location features controlled by the family.

  • Simple audio functions.

  • Reminders.

  • A clear and tactile interface.

It could deliberately avoid:

  • Social-media feeds.

  • Endless short-form video.

  • Unrestricted browsing.

  • Open application marketplaces.

  • Attention-driven notifications.

  • Features that are not necessary for the device’s purpose.

This is not technology that has failed to include enough.

It is technology that has been clear about what it is for.

Wellbeing should be considered during design

UNICEF’s Responsible Innovation in Technology for Children initiative encourages designers to embed children’s wellbeing into digital products from the beginning. Its work recognises that individual design decisions can influence children’s experiences and that wellbeing should not be added only after problems appear.

This principle can extend beyond games and applications.

It can influence the design of the device itself.

Instead of asking:

“How much can this product do?”

Designers can ask:

“What should this product help a child do?”

That question changes the direction of innovation.

Gradual technology for gradual independence

Children grow into new responsibilities over time.

They do not receive every adult freedom on one particular birthday.

Digital independence could follow the same pattern.

A child’s first device could provide a limited set of essential functions. Greater capability could then be introduced as the child develops judgement, resilience and digital literacy.

This approach does not reject technology.

It respects timing.

Technology does not always need to become more demanding, more absorbing or more complex.

Sometimes the most advanced design decision is subtraction.
