When Every Notification Feels Important
A small sound can carry a surprisingly powerful message
A vibration.
A banner.
A red badge.
A sound from a pocket.
Notifications are useful.
They tell us when somebody is calling, when an appointment has changed or when an important message has arrived.
But modern devices do not reserve notifications only for important events.
Applications may notify users about:
new content;
reactions;
recommendations;
streaks;
promotions;
suggested videos;
people they may know;
activity they have missed; and
reasons to return to an app.
Each individual notification can seem insignificant.
Together, they can create a device that repeatedly asks for attention throughout the day.
Not all interruptions are equal
Imagine someone tapping a child on the shoulder dozens of times while they are:
doing homework;
eating dinner;
talking to a friend;
watching a sibling play sport;
reading;
or simply thinking.
Eventually, those interruptions would matter.
Digital interruptions can be easier to overlook because they are small and familiar.
Yet every notification contains the same basic request:
Look at me.
The challenge is not that children should never receive notifications.
It is deciding which notifications deserve access to their attention.
A message from a parent may matter.
An emergency alert may matter.
A reminder about tomorrow's school activity may matter.
Whether an app needs to announce that new content is waiting is a different question.
Attention should not be treated as unlimited
Children's time is divided among many important things:
learning;
sleep;
friendships;
family;
sport;
creativity;
play;
boredom;
thinking;
and rest.
Technology operates within that same limited amount of time.
If a device continually creates reasons to return to it, other activities must compete harder for attention.
This is one reason Precious Minds believes the conversation about children's technology should extend beyond simply measuring screen time.
The design of the technology matters too.
A child using a device for thirty minutes because they deliberately chose to contact a friend is different from a device interrupting them repeatedly throughout the entire afternoon.
What if silence was the default?
A child-focused device could take a different approach.
Essential communication could get through.
Most other things could wait.
Notifications could be limited by design rather than requiring parents to individually disable them.
The device could behave less like something constantly trying to regain attention and more like a tool waiting quietly until it is needed.
Technology does not always need to announce itself.
Sometimes the best feature is the ability to remain silent.
