A Child's First Phone Is Also a Privacy Decision

We often think about features before we think about data

What information is this device collecting about my child?

Modern digital services can collect many different types of information depending on the product and permissions involved.

This can include:

  • location;

  • device information;

  • browsing behaviour;

  • search history;

  • app activity;

  • interactions;

  • contacts;

  • advertising identifiers; and

  • patterns of usage.

For adults, understanding this ecosystem is difficult enough.

For children, it can be almost invisible.

Children cannot meaningfully evaluate every digital trade-off

Adults routinely click:

“Accept.”

“Allow.”

“Continue.”

“Agree.”

Sometimes without reading everything either.

Expecting children to properly evaluate privacy policies, data permissions and long-term consequences is unrealistic.

A child may understand that allowing an application to access their location makes a feature work.

They may not understand how that information could be stored, combined with other data or used to personalise an experience.

That is why children's privacy should not depend only on the child making the right decision every time a permission screen appears.

Protection should be built into the environment.

Useful data and unnecessary data are different things

Some information can support valuable functions.

For example, a parent may deliberately choose location sharing because it helps their family manage school travel or emergencies.

The key question is not whether technology should ever use data.

It is whether the amount of data collected is proportionate to the service being provided.

A child-focused communication product should be able to ask:

  • Do we genuinely need this information?

  • How long does it need to be kept?

  • Who needs access to it?

  • Is this feature understandable to the family?

  • Can we deliver the service while collecting less?

Privacy by design means asking these questions before the product reaches the child.

Simple technology can create simpler privacy choices

The more functions a device contains, the more complex its privacy environment can become.

More apps can mean more permissions.

More platforms can mean more accounts.

More services can mean more privacy policies and more decisions for families to manage.

A device with a clearer purpose may also allow for clearer privacy expectations.
