What Should a Child’s First Device Actually Do?

When parents think about a child’s first phone, the question is often:

“When should they get a smartphone?”

But a better question may be:

“What do they actually need the device to do?”

For many families, the answer is simple:

  • Call home

  • Receive important messages

  • Ask for help

  • Stay connected while becoming more independent

That does not automatically require social media, games, browsers, app stores and endless content.

A child may be ready for communication before they are ready for everything else.

That is the thinking behind Precious Minds.

Candy Bar begins with a simple principle:

Start with what matters. Add more only when it is genuinely needed.

A first device should not be judged by how many things it can do.

It should be judged by how well it supports the child at that stage of life.
